Sustainable Kitchen Essentials Gift Registry

by: Janette Janero

As a personal trainer, I have seen how an individual’s wellness is affected by factors outside that of just exercise and nutrition. The Naked Formula looks at every dimension of wellness and makes suggestions to strip each area for the purpose of following a simpler and healthier lifestyle.

The items you bring into your home will affect your financial wellness, physical, wellness, emotional, wellness, environmental wellness, and even your spiritual wellness. This list is perfect for individuals who are about to move either as a result of a new job, getting married, going away to college, or others looking for a new beginning as this is a great time to “strip your lifestyle” with the Naked Formula.

These items have been found to be long-lasting, ethically sourced/manufactured, plastic-free, AND/OR made of sustainable materials. There are items on this list that have lasted me 15 years and counting. Everything on this list is either currently being used in my home, or will be purchased in the future as needed to replace any less-sustainable items I currently own.

A short description is provides as to why this particular item and brand made the list. You can click on the photo of the item for more information. A new window will open so you can add the item to your cart or your Amazon gift registry while still having this page open so you can easily return and view the rest of the list. You may also see links for discounts from the manufacture. I do suggest also purchasing these items second hand if and when possible. You can search for these items on sites like Mercari and OfferUp if you would like to purchase them secondhand.  Some of these items may contain affiliated links.

Stainless steel stock pot, sauce pan, and fry pan

You can purchase them as a set from the brand Viking

How will I use this? These three pots are all you need for basic home cooking. The stainless steel model from the brand Viking or Made In will last you a lifetime.

Why Stainless Steel? I have a stainless steel cookware set that has lasted over 15 years and still look and performs like new. Stainless steel is a popular choice by professionals for its versatility and performance. I have purchased eco-friendly non-stick pans and they have not held up well. I also do not purchase traditional non-stick pans because the chemicals they leech onto the food and into the air have been found to be harmful for our respiratory system. In addition to them not lasting long and releasing flakes onto the food.

Why Made In? Because they are made in the United States or Italy. They are a fairly new company, but are gaining more popularity among professionals. Plus, they have very competitive prices compared to other stainless steel cookware manufactured in the United States. Click here to receive a $15 off your first Made In order over $100. It is definitely worth considering these based on their price.

Why Viking? Because the 3-Ply and Professional 5-Ply are made in the United States (except for their Contemporary 3-Ply line which is made in china) and have proven to be a brand trusted by professionals. I chose them over All-Clad , which is also stainless steel and mostly made in America, for design preference such as their slopped handles.

You can also choose to purchase or register for them individually to make substitutions to fit your personal cooking needs.

How will I use this? Pan frying, searing, and browning.

Stainless Steel Saucepan by Viking or Made In

How will I use this? Cooking anything that is mostly liquid such as sauces or heating small servings of soup.

Substitute: You can opt for a saucier (pictured above) which has rounded corner making stirring simpler and reducing quicker. A saucier has rounded corners and shorter walls so the liquid inside heats and thickens quicker. However, liquids can spill over easier given the shorter walls so care must be taken if the pan will be moved while food is inside.

Stainless Steel Stock Pot or Pasta Pot by Viking or Made In

How will I use this? For soup, stock, beans, and pasta.  If you will mostly your large pot to boil water for pasta, you can consider purchasing a pasta pot like the one in the picture above.

How will I use this? This piece is one of the most versatile items on the list! You can bake savory or sweet dishes (as long as they are not tomato based). You can use aluminum foil to divid the pan and roast vegetables on one side and a protein separately on the other side. You an insert oven-safe muffin cups ( made from 100% silicon) and use this pan as a muffin pan without having to purchase a separate pan. I recommend these muffin cups because they are are made in Italy. The lid that comes with this pan will let you travel with this pan as well as be used as a serving tray to display the contents of the pan such as brownies, muffins, or individual appetizers.

Clear Rectangular Glass Roaster by Simax

Why Simax? This product is made using Borosilicate glass and is manufactured in Europe. This glass perform better under thermal shock than the type of glass used by Pyrex.

Silicon Spatula

How will I use this? This is probably one of the most used items in my kitchen. Even though this style of spatula is traditionally meant for baking, I use them for multiple purposes. I especially love these while making scrambled eggs and omelets. The slender spatula will also be ideal for reaching the bottom of jars.

Why Heirloom Living? I chose this brand because it is made in the United States and uses pure silicon for these spatulas.

Swedish Dishcoths

How will I use this? You can use these as you would use paper towels or kitchen towels.

Why Swedish Dishcloths? I avoid using synthetic fibers as they can add plastic water pollution. These cothes are high quality European made and can be conveniently machine washed and dried.

Glass Containers with Bamboo and Silicon Lids

How will I use this? These containers are perfect to store goods purchased at a refill station or at the bulk bin section of a grocery store. They are an absolute must in a zero-waste or low-waste home. This is a great starter pack, but you can consider purchasing sets containing higher amounts to just one size like this one: 10 Piece Glass Storage Jars Set with Airtight Bamboo Lids, 5oz Glass Spice Jars-Mini Food Storage Containers for Home Kitchen, Tea, Herbs, Sugar, Salt, Coffee, Flour, Herbs, Grains

Why NANA? These containers are made of borosilicate glass, bamboo lids and food-grade silicone rings. They are plastic free, BPA-free and lead-free. Unfortunately, I have not found information on where these are made which makes me assume these are manufactured in China. These are the second of three items on this list not manufactured in North America or Europe. The quality and safety of this product meets that of what we would expect from items manufactured in North America or Europe. However, that does not necessarily mean that they meet the standards of ethics North America and Europe has for employees who work at the manufacturing factories. If you are not comfortable purchasing this set because of this unknown, then you can consider the Nakpunar 12 pcs 16 oz Mason Jars with White Lids – Made in USA -1 Pint (16 oz, White). These are made in the United States, but they have plastisol lids.

Stainless Steel Strainer

How will I use this? You can sift ingredients like flour, strain ingredients like quinoa, and sieve soups. This is sometime we use  multiple times a week.

Why Sur La Table? Let me start off by saying I spend days searching for a strainer made in anywhere in North America or Europe. I spent so long because I know that at one point American Housewares manufacture strainers in the United States. I knew that it was out there, but every search led to the same three words. “Out Of Stock”.  Sur La Table at least has a stainless steel strainer manufactured in China specifically for this store. The quality and design is the best you will find. However, as mentioned with the other products made in China on this list, the quality of this product is excellent, but that does not necessarily mean that they meet the standards of ethics North America and Europe has for employees who work at the manufacturing factories. The two other items on this list made in China had a similar item you could substitute that was manufactured in North America or Europe, but there is no substitute found manufactured anywhere else for a strainer this fine.
